reporting... :)
THEY CAME, THEY SAW, THEY CONQUERED.
It was the 2nd Nasugbu Skim Competition last April 18-19,2009 at Pavillion Beach. People arrived early in the morning to participate not only in the water-sport contest, but also in the Football Games. Teams from the Army and the Marines and boys and girls from different schools and organizations also supported the Samer Saya Sa Nasugbu.
All right, then. So what was new?
Aside from the fact that it was the first time for most of the skimboarders from Metro Manila to join and witness the event, there was this news that the Tanauan, Leyte Crew including the Espada brothers were going to grace the competition.
What we didn’t know was how they were going to surprise us.
For readers who doesn’t know who the Espada brothers are (I was guilty of this too, at first) Leo Espada won the Malaysian tilt last year and brought pride for the whole country, while his cousins, brothers Brando and Dariel are uber-skilled riders, with Dariel grabbing 3 annual championship trophies in the 6 years of National Skimboarding Competition in Tanauan, Leyte. And (spoiler) just recently, Brando seized the top award in the Master’s Division at the Nasugbu heats.
With the support of their Tanauan Mayor Roque Tiu (who by the way watched the event wearing only slippers on his feet) they flew to Manila and went to Nasugbu to really make their titles “national”.
They have national skills, indeed! International, even!
We have been addicted to youtube for so long now, searching for the best skim videos, whacking our heads with keywords and tags, when bam! Here’s the guys we’ve been ogling at cyberspace!
You won’t believe your eyes when you see the Leyte Crew! Include their best guy Lemuel, whose nickname was coincidentally Mumay (same name as you-know-what), there were one hell of skimboarders to watch. Mumay is this year’s defending champion at the Nationals in Leyte. He surfs, longboards and apparently makes Driftwood boards. We enjoyed his skimboarding and magic tricks. And no doubt, he’s really loved by the crowd.
Tanauan really bought us something to watch. They bought us their best riders and we are more than glad to watch and learn.
Aerials. 360. 540. Cut Backs. Ollies. (insert staccato list of tricks here)
Sometimes, they all do that in one run. Can you believe?
I almost peed when Leo took two waves and then shoved-it out. A girlfriend of mine, did a cartwheel when Brando did a 360 aerial.
They’re flying! Brando did mostly wicked, nasty aerials that made the crowd cheer in a mix of wild amusement, disbelief and whoa idolatry.
Dariel stunned us with tricks that would make any skimboarder raise a 10-card. He showed what a grand-slam skimboarder is made of. We observed that it’s made mostly of speed, footwork and a lot of guts – aside from drinking and smoking less prior to playing.
No contest on them bagging the top three spots in the competition.
Much as we “revere” them, the Tanauan boys were humble and very friendly dudes.
All of us can’t wait to watch them again at the Zambales Attack this April 25.
